Foundation repair
A stair-step crack in block or a corner that's settled usually points to the footing. I'll find what's moving before we patch anything, because a patch over movement just cracks again.
Fieldstone Rialto Concrete and Masonry is a masonry contractor based in Rialto that builds and repairs block walls, brick, stone and chimneys for homeowners in Upland, CA. I look at each job myself before our crew starts.

Most of the calls we get from Upland are about worn mortar, a block wall that's started to lean, or a backyard project that's been on the list for years. A lot of the houses here have been around a long time, and older brick and block usually needs mortar and color matched to what's already there, not a quick patch.
What moves the price is how much wall or brick there is, how tall it runs, how easy it is to get to and whether we're repairing or tearing out. The schedule turns on whether the city needs a permit or a design review first, and on what we find once old mortar or a footing is opened up. Your own number comes in the written estimate after I've seen the job.
We're based in Rialto and work across this end of the valley, from Rancho Cucamonga next door to Grand Terrace out past Colton, and an Upland job gets the same crew as any other.
When a job needs a permit, we handle the application with Upland's Building and Safety Division. If I'm not sure one's needed, I check with the division before we start, so you're not guessing.
Contractors working in Upland need a current city business license, and the online permit application asks for it along with the contractor's license, so the paperwork has to be in order before anything is filed.
I'm the one who comes out, and I'll tell you right there whether a wall is worth repairing or needs to come down, because a wall done twice costs a family twice.

Loose brick up top and a cracked cap let water work down into a chimney. We rebuild the damaged rows and the cap with brick and mortar that match what's already there.
When mortar joints go sandy, we grind them out, pack in fresh mortar and run a fine line along each joint the way older brick was finished, so the brick stays tight.
Cracked or spalled brick, where the face has flaked off, gets cut out and replaced one at a time. We match size and color closely so the repair blends in.
We break out a cracked concrete driveway, dig and compact a new base, and set pavers with a firm edge so they hold their line under a car's weight.
Water behind a retaining wall is what usually pushes it over, so we build ours with a solid footing, drain rock and weep holes that let it out.
On older brick and stone, we clean, repoint and replace damaged pieces with mortar soft enough for the old material, because hard modern mortar can crack old brick.
We build masonry fireplaces for living rooms and patios, with the firebox, hearth and surround in brick or stone. I'll go over size and fuel with you before anything is ordered.
Thin stone veneer can dress up a plain stucco front, porch columns or a fireplace. We set it over metal lath and a base coat of mortar so it grips the wall.
Plenty of yards here are fenced with block, and a leaning section usually means the footing gave or the steel rusted. We rebuild on a new footing with rebar and grout.
For additions and garages, we lay block foundation walls on poured footings, set level and tied with rebar, because everything framed above has to sit square on them.
We build the block frame for grills, counters and bars, then finish it in stone, brick or stucco. I'll plan the openings around your grill and fridge so nothing gets cut twice.
We build walkways in brick, pavers, flagstone or concrete on a dug and compacted base, sloped a little so water runs off, because the base is what keeps a path from sinking.
We build brick garden walls, planters and mailbox columns on a footing sized for the wall, with joints tooled tight to shed water. Brick costs more than block, but it ages well.
We lay natural stone for walls, steps, columns and planters, fitting each piece so the weight rests on stone instead of mortar. It's slower than block, and the finished wall looks it.
When the brick is sound and only the mortar is worn, we rake out the bad joints and refill them with mortar matched in color and hardness, so the brick stays put.
Send the form and we'll get back to you within one business day to set a time. I'll walk the job with you, measure, take photos and give you a free written estimate, with no pressure to book.
A line about the crack, the lean or the project you have in mind helps me know what to look at and measure when I come out to your house.
We're open Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 10 PM and weekends from 6 AM to 9 PM, so you can call after work or first thing Saturday.
We're licensed and insured, and our work is backed by our satisfaction guarantee. Our crew does the work, and I'm on site running it, so you've got one person to ask.
These are the permit and review questions that come up most when Upland homeowners plan a wall, a chimney fix or other masonry work.
Upland doesn't require a building permit for a fence 6 feet tall or less or a block wall 2 feet tall or less. A taller wall or other masonry work may need one, and the city's building permits page links its list of projects that don't. That's what I check your job against before we start.
Upland takes building permit requests online only, so there's no paper application to drop off. When a job of ours needs one, we submit the request ourselves and we're there for the inspections, so there's nothing for you to file. I'll keep you posted on where it stands.
It does only if your property is designated as a historic resource, and then exterior changes that alter its appearance need a Certificate of Appropriateness, a design approval from the city's Planning Division. Upland has 9 local historic districts and over 580 properties on its register, so if yours is one of them, we plan that review into the schedule.
These are the cities with their own page on our site, and they aren't the only places we work. If yours isn't listed, call or send the form and ask.
Call (909) 546-5001 or send the form, because worn mortar is a smaller fix caught early than after the wall starts moving.
